All colours faded?

Anurag Kashyap’s latest flick faced a lot of protests in Jaipur from the Rajput community. JT got in touch with the director to clear the air.
All colours faded?
Anurag Kashyaps latest film is in the midst of a row for allegedly hurting the sentiments of the Rajput community in Rajasthan. But Anurag is convinced that its not the community but a certain political section that is creating the furore.
So while making the film, did the thought ever cross his mind that a certain part of it would upset a section of the Rajput community? No, I did not think any such thing would happen, primarily because its a fictional work though it has made use of historical facts, says the director.
1x1 polls
Anurag, however, is upset with the protests, specially after he heard that they came from the same community with whom he had shot for the film. It was shot among the very people who are now protesting against the film. And the palaces and places we shot in are owned by Rajputs who were all well aware of and approved of what I was doing. Most of these protesters, I feel, are political people trying to gain mileage out of my movie. I guess, its become some kind of a trend nowadays. I hope they see the film, as only then will they realise how objective it is, he adds.
Though the filmmaker is disappointed with the whole issue, he is certain that no community is part of the protests. It is a politically-fuelled issue, opines Anurag. Justifying the content of the film, he suggests that people should do some research before pointing a finger at him or the film. I would suggest that people do some homework before creating a din. To check on facts, all they have to do is just go on to the internet and check the details related to the time I am talking about in the film. Rest, as is done in the rest of the world, specially in the world of cinema, fiction is woven around facts. Even in films like The Da Vinci Code, the filmmaker has used Mona Lisa and Da Vinci to build a tale... Or take the example of any Bond movie, it will prove how fiction is written keeping in mind social and political trends.
The director feels that Indian cinema will take a long time to come out of these petty controversies. He also asserts that the government should stop all such incidents with an iron hand. Instead, it is promoting them to gain vote-banks. Indian cinema is always abused for small reasons and by people who dont care or know about art. The sad part is that the government doesnt care one bit about stopping it, all because the people in it worry more about their vote banks. Hindi cinema, I feel, will be safe only when its characters will have no caste, religion, community or political leanings. I guess, in that case, we must only give numbers to our characters instead of names and make only mindless, escapist cinema.
Anurags furious with all the people who poke their noses into other peoples affairs for no reason at all. To them, he says, Go find something better to do. Why dont you improve the infrastructure or solve real problems or else if you have nothing to do then go and find a job for yourself.
